Passage Criticism from Jean Rhys’ “Wide Sargasso Sea”
[ send me this essay ]
This is a 5 page paper discussing elements of imagery and figurative language used throughout a passage in “Wide Sargasso Sea”. Jean Rhys uses vivid elements of imagery and figurative language to set the themes and tone throughout the novel “Wide Sargasso Sea”. In doing this, Rhys often shows oppositions within the environment in which certain characters must remain for the structure to remain consistent. A passage found on pages 65 and 66 (Penguin edition) relates Rochester leaving his structured world and getting lost in the forest to be later rescued by Baptiste. Within the forest, Rochester finds the forest to be dark and hostile as the bushes and branches grab at his legs. The only elements of civilization he finds are a road and a stone house which are overgrown and deserted. His relationship with Baptiste within the forest also differs with that outside of the forest. The passage overall contains many useful elements used throughout the novel which express the foreign aspects of the islands which are seen as dark, hostile and decayed from the colonial point of view. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Peru: Sterilization Versus Family Planning
[ send me this essay ]
15 pages in length. There have been a number of benefits to come out of mandatory birth control in past history. In China, for example, not only has the nation's birth rate dropped significantly over the past decades, but its per capita income has experienced a monumental augmentation -- from 235 yuan back in the early 1970's to twenty-two hundred in 1995 -- that has yielded its people a much more advantageous existence. For Peru, the issue of overpopulation has come full circle to such an extreme that the nation's family planning organization thought it necessary to force sterilize myriad numbers of unwitting females; in many other cases, however, women were offered as much as fifty pounds of food for their consent. Is this practice one might consider unethical, or is it the only means by which a struggling society can even begin to come to grips with its massive overpopulation problem that family planning cannot control? Bibliography lists 15 sources.
