Negron-Muntaner/Barbie's Hair
[ send me this essay ]
A 3 page paper that discusses this essay. A doll seems like an unlikely candidate for controversy. Yet, yet Frances Negron-Muntaner, in her essay "Barbie's Hair," describes how controversy immediately arose when the Mattel Toy Company released a Puerto Rican version of their famous Barbie doll in 1997. Communities, both in Puerto Rico and the mainland US, associated the doll with cultural connotations that involved "Puerto Rican identity" (Negron-Muntaner 39). The author of this provocative essay makes a number of pertinent points about this version of Barbie within the context of popular culture, however, two of the most intriguing points made in the essay are the significance that was attached to the meaning of the doll's hair and how this related to Puerto Rican identity and also how the doll represented a political position in terms of Puerto Rico's place on the world stage. Nicaraguan Influence on the United States
[ send me this essay ]
A 9 page research paper that examines the relationship between these two counties. The writer argues that the history of Nicaragua and that of the United States has long been intertwined. The U.S. has felt that an interest in Nicaragua was crucial to its national interest and security since the middle of the nineteenth century. However, no relationship works in only one direction. Just as the United States has influenced the course of historical development in Nicaragua, this involvement has necessarily involved a Nicaraguan influence in U.S. culture. This influence has largely manifested itself in much the same way that U.S. involvement in Vietnam caused a corresponding dissention movement that had a great influence on the political and cultural atmosphere within the United States. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

[ send me this essay ]
5 pages in length. Nicaragua maintained one of the most powerful economies of Central America until the late 1970s, even in the face of an oppressive authoritarianism that had been in existence since the first half of the century. The year 1979 marked the point in time when the Sandinistas took over, bringing to bear their revolutionary political style, starting a downward economic and social spiral that would not cease for more than a decade (Harris, 1993) and encouraging thousands upon thousands of Nicaraguans to seek a better life in Miami. Bibliography lists 8 sources.
