Learning of Self
[ send me this essay ]
(5 pp) When we first begin to make the effort of
learning, or deciding who we are, or who we want
to be, we usually have to take into account how
others perceive us. Naturally the first who do
that are our parents. We have that problem
presented in the readings that we have been given:
Amy Tann's "Two Kinds," and Danzy Senna's
"The Mulatto Millennium." These two works will be
used as a basis for the "learning of self."

Legitimacy of China’s Legal System and the Strength of the
Chinese Communist Party
[ send me this essay ]
This 5 page report discusses the facts
that as China modernizes and becomes a more accepted partner in
global enterprises and market opportunities, the Western world is
more carefully evaluating the society that has evolved in modern
China. The debates surrounding issues as varied as trade
normalization, human rights violations, and whether or not China
has any hope of hosting the Olympics, those in the debate
repeatedly ask whether or not China has really changed (or is
changing). Seeing how the Chinese government reacts to its own
citizens who criticize it suggests that beneath the facade of
international business, the totalitarian behemoth still lurks.
In addition, the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) remains firmly in
control of virtually all social, judicial, and political
occurrences in the nation. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Leo Ou-Fan Lee/Shanghai Modern
[ send me this essay ]
A 10 page book review that profiles this text. In the preface to his book Shanghai Modern, author Leo Ou-Fan Lee summarizes his text concisely in one sentence: "This is a book about the city of Shanghai in the 1930s as a cultural matrix of Chinese modernity" (Lee xi). Unlike many Western scholars who have written about Shanghai, Lee offers an "insider's point of view" by looking primarily at Chinese material, that is, "literary journals, newspapers as well as works by individual authors and scholars" in order to construct a "picture of Shanghai's urban culture at the height of its splendor" (Lee xi). Examination of this text shows that Lee succeeded admirably in his goal, as the reader acquires from Lee a nuanced, multi-level perspective on Shanghai culture during this period. Bibliography lists 2 sources.
